Alumna Spotight: Paula Novacki, `14

Ever wondered what life after graduation will look like?  Meet Paula Novacki!

Paula is a 2014 University of South Carolina graduate and owner of PN Media.  Though Paula majored in Journalism and Public Relations during her years on campus, she never expected to open her own media company.

During her time at UofSC, Paula was very involved on campus.  From the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSA) to sorority life to working at the Daily Gamecock and more, there wasn’t much Paula didn’t do.  After co-founding the pre-law fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta, and thinking law school was her next step, Paula realized her love for digital advertising.

Paula’s academic training within the journalism school as well as her senior year Carolina Agency project with the Office of President Pastides and My Carolina Alumni Association helped her start a career in Washington D.C.  When asked how her time and involvement at Carolina impacted her career, Paula said, “even after I had graduated, I was skyping with former professors helping me interview prep for high-profile public relations jobs on the hill and internships with Fortune 100 entities. I am so grateful for everything the J-school did for my professional success.”  Her advice to students is three-fold: be flexible, take advantage of networking opportunities, and take a job to learn, not to make money.

Upon graduation, Paula moved to Washington D.C. and spent four years working for globally known PR firms and ad agencies.  During these years she worked for a wide range of clients, including corporate communications, food and nutrition, commercial energy, and even sports.  So how did she get from working in D.C. to owning her own company?

After a backpacking trip in South America, Paula realized she wanted more time to travel and freelance.  After returning to D.C. and working for a few months to build her client base, she started her own LLC, PR Media.  Regarding her decision to work for herself, Paula said “I couldn't be happier with my decision and am excited for where the next year takes me.”  Paula has had the opportunity to travel across the world for her company.  This spring alone she is traveling to Oregon, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Los Angeles, Denver, Breckenridge, Mexico City, Colombia and Rio de Janeiro, to name a few.

Paula currently serves as the Washington D.C. club chair-elect.  D.C. is one of the six cities identified in My Carolina’s strategic plan to increase the Gamecock footprint and is home to one of the most vibrant My Carolina clubs.  Paula formed a relationship with the D.C. Gamecocks during her Carolina Agency project partnership.  When asked how she got involved with the club as an alumna, Paula said, “when I graduated and moved back to D.C. they [the D.C. Gamecocks] asked if I'd like to be on the board, and it was one of the best post-grad decisions I ever made. I made a ton of professional connections and great friends in D.C.  The former club chair and I are actually traveling to Brazil together in April!”
