As chair of the UofSC Alumni Association’s Columbia club, Brooke Bailey, ’02 is using her South Carolina experience to engage more Gamecocks in the city.
Bailey values volunteering in her community to use her skills and experiences in new ways. “What’s better than to volunteer and take on a leadership role for something you are passionate about – and I am most passionate about the University of South Carolina,” she says.
Bailey was born and raised a Gamecock and is a third-generation graduate. Due to this passion, becoming club chair of the Columbia Gamecocks was a natural fit based upon her time at South Carolina.
“When I think about the best time in my life, I think about my time at the University of South Carolina,” she says. “The education, experiences, friendships and memories I made there have stayed with me to this day. I carry them close to my heart.”
As club chair, Bailey views herself as an ambassador for the alumni association and advocates for alumni engagement opportunities, membership within the association and strengthening the Gamecock pride and traditions in the Midlands area. Recently, the Columbia Gamecocks held pre-game tailgate parties for both South Carolina Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, a lunch and learn with university architect, Derek Gruner and several Gamecock happy hours.
Bailey acknowledges that being in the same city as the university has it perks. “We take advantage of not only all of the alumni and supporters in the Midlands area, but also our proximity to the facilities and people that makeup the state’s flagship university,” she says. “As the hometown alumni club, we are afforded many opportunities and our members should certainly take advantage of them.”
Membership within the alumni association helps engage more Gamecocks nationwide. As a Life member, Bailey notes that her membership is an opportunity to stay connected to the university, find new ways to serve and meet Gamecocks who share her love for her alma mater. It all leads back to the Gamecock community when she says, “I know I always have a place in which to come home.”
