Volunteer Spotlight: Brooks Hearn

young alumni

By: Haven Spanyer

Growing up in a Gamecock family, Brooks was destined to attend the University of South Carolina. Now as an alumna, Brooks stays connected with her alma mater by serving on the Young Alumni Council.

Brooks Hearn is a two-time graduate of the University of South Carolina. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Public Relations in 2007 and her Master of Public Administration in 2009. She now works as the Director of Advancement at Pinewood Preparatory School.

It was no question where Brooks wanted to attend college. A Gamecock legacy, the overwhelming majority of Brooks’ immediate and extended family members attended UofSC.

“I was fortunate to attend Gamecocks sporting events since childhood, even appearing as the Baby Cocky mascot at football games during one football season when I was two! Although UofSC is a family tradition, I discovered how much the school meant to me personally during my time as a student,” she said.

As a student, Brooks was extremely involved on campus. She was a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Alumni Scholars Association, Cru and Phi Beta Kappa. In addition to her student organization involvement, Brooks was also in the Honor’s College and served as a University 101 Peer Leader.

Brooks’ level of involvement didn’t stop when she graduated.

“I was an officer with the University's PRSSA chapter as an undergraduate. Things have now come full circle as I recently joined the Board of Directors of the state chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA),” Brooks explained.

In addition to PRSA, Brooks is involved in her community as a past president of the Junior Service League of Summerville and a current regional field director for the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization. She also serves on UofSC’s Young Alumni Council (YAC).

“As an undergraduate, I was honored to receive the Alumni Scholarship. It was my goal to stay connected to the Alumni Association as a student member and post-graduation. I want to inspire other young alumni to connect with and be advocates for our University through my participation in YAC.”
